Batticaloa Lighthouse

Creative Commons Photo by Markus Spring taken on 2008 after USAID renovations.

Batticaloa Lighthouse is located few kilometres from the town of Batticaloa on the Bar Road. It takes approx 15-20 minutes drive from the town to the light house. This is round masonry tower with 5 windows, lantern and gallery, painted white.

This lighthouse was built in 1913 by the British and is 28 meters in height. After being neglected for years due the LTTE Terrorists activities in this area, In December 2003, the east coast of Sri Lanka was badly effected by a major tsunami. But the lighthouse suffered only minor damage. With the foreign aid agencies visiting this area after the tsunami it got a much needed face lift with USAID tsunami relief funds.
