Bihalpola Rajamaha Viharaya

According to the legend, this Viharaya was constructed during the reign of King Devanmpiya Tissa (250-251 B.C.). Among the ruins that can be seen at the site, there are a Stupa, an Attani pillar inscription, several stone pillar base and a flight of steps, possibly belonging to the Anuradhapura period.

There is Tempita Viharaya, which is known as Datu Mandiraya, built during the Kandy period. Among the paintings on the walls of the Viharaya figures of Arhants Sariputta and Moggallana can be seen. On the ceiling, a delightful lotus design has been painted and along the walls of the corridor the paintings of Vessantara and some other Jathaka stories are depicted.

nuwarakanda Purana raja maha vihara

the building of this temple was initiated by prince Sooratissa according to the requirement of venerable Mihindu. its construction was continued even during the time of king Walagamba. the chaithya of this temple is known as the third oldest in sri lanka, and yet today unfortunately is reduced to ruins of stone heaps.

Pallama Nandimithra Raja Maha Viharaya

The Nandimithra Raja Maha Viharaya is said to be built by on of the King Dutugemunu's (161-131 BC) warrior giants, the Nandimithra. Recent excavations have located remains ancient building and a farmer who was digging an coconut pit near the temple has unearthened an copper statue of about 5 1/2 feet in height.

Naindanawa Rajamaha Viharaya


The Gient Seven Headed Cobra Carving

The ancient Naindanawa Rajamaha Viharaya is siad to have the Largest Nipena (seven hooded Cobra) carving in the country. The temple is situated in the remote village of Palagama in Polpithigama in Kurunegala district.
