The Ramboda Ella (Puna Ella) double fall is unique in the ‘Y’ form where two waterfalls with two water sources merge into one at the bottom. The water in the fall on the left is from the Puna Oya, A canal which comes through the forest reserve above.

Until recently this waterfall was known as “Ramboda Ella” as this is the tallest by far of the waterfalls created by Puna Oya in this region. Dr Kautzsch too identifies this waterfall as Ramboda Ella. However, now the three waterfalls above these falls are identified by this name, Upper Ramboda Ella, Center Ramboda Ella, and Lower Ramboda Ella. This waterfall is now known as Puna Ella.

The fall on the right-hand side is made up of water from Pundalu Oya which flows through cultivated land above. Most of the year the fall flowing through the Pandalu Oya carries more volume but during periods of long drought, the role is reversed. The water flowing on the left fall remains more or less the same while the water on the other fall reduces significantly.

This waterfall is known by many names. Puna Ella (Puna Falls) and Poonawa Ella ( Poonawa Falls) are the most popular. Since the two falls originated out of Puna Oya and Pundalu Oya, The two are separately called Pundalu Oya Ella and Puna Ella. But in general, the waterfall referred to as Puna Ella as Pundalu Oya Falls is already been used for Dunsinane Falls in Nuwara Eliya District.

This fall can be seen on the Peradeniya – Nuwara Eliya Route between Pussellawa and Ramboda.
