Ketawala (Katawala) is a small town in Haliela DS you will come across when when you travel to the popular Bogoda Bridge either from Hali-Ela or Etampitiya. The Ketawala Ambalama lies by the four-way junction in the center of the city amidst the busy commercial buildings.
During the Kandyan Kingdom, there has been a road across Ketawala to reach Badulla. The Bogoda Bridge too has been part of this this ancient route. It has been a popular route for the Kandyan pilgrims to Badulla Muthiyangana Viharaya and the Badulla pilgrims who traveled to the Temple of Tooth in Kandy during the Kandyan Era. Unfortunately today this road is forgotten and lost in time. This ambalama would have served as a resting place for the weary travelers on this road long time ago.
The Ketawala Ambalama is a small brick and mortar structure with no special decoration. The roof is said to be built using Kumbuk timber and tiled with semi cylindrical barrel clay tiles (sinhala ulu). This ambalama was declared as a protected archaeological monument in 2005.
