The hillock at Malgahaussa consists of ancient Buddhist ruins including a stupa granite pillars and many other archaeological artefacts in the Pollebedda area in Mahaoya. The ruins surrounding this hillock were declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government in the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Buddhist Monastery complex with a hillock of ancient Chaitya, all places of buildings with stone pillars and other archaeological evidence at the place of (Latitude 07º 46′ 03.3” N and longitude 081º 39′ 55.8” E) at the foot of Malgahaussa hill belonging to Galwalayaya village situated in the Grama Niladhari Division, Pollebedda in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Mahaoya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
