The village of Kotawehera of Ampara lies about 8.5 km away on the Inginiyagala Road from the Ampara town. Pre historic paintings in drip ledge caves have been discovered in the jungles surrounding the A.C. Camp Village in Kotawehera. There are about 3 to 4 caves with drip ledges and in one cave where a monk once meditated few vedda paintings could be seen.

This area of ruins  has been  declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Rocks with paintings of Pre historic era, cave inscriptions and drip ledged caves in the forest of A. C. camp situated in A. C. camp village belonging to Grama Niladhari Division Kotawehera in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Ampara in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 14’59.8” N and longitude 081º 37′ 35”E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get directions to the ruins beforehand. The area is probably dominated by non Buddhist community and most might be reluctant to  disclose  this location.
