Madawalalanda is a traditional remote village deep in the jungles in Damana Divisional Secretary’s Division in Ampara. This farming village is sustained by the Malayadikanda reservoir fed by Iginiyagala reservoir through right bank irrigation canal.  In the interior of the village lies two rock mountains which are called “Podi Kanda” and “Mattayagala Kanda”.

The drip ledge caves with inscriptions along with the ruins of ancient buildings in the Mattayagala Rock  has been  declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Rock with drip ledged caves with inscriptions and ruins of buildings and archaeological evidences scattered in the surrounding area in Mattayagala forest reservation in Madawalalanda village in Grama Niladari Division No. W/24/A Madawalalanda in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Damana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 19619′ N and longitude 081º 6724.9′ E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get directions to the site beforehand.
