Lahugala Ethgala Archaeological Site – ලාහුගල ඇත්ගාල පුරාවිද්‍යා භූමිය

Traveling on the road to the popular Magul Maha Viharaya, 300 meters past the temple car park, you will come across a 4 way junction in middle of a paddy field. Take the the road to the left and traveling for 800 meters will bring you to a typical archaeology board which directs you to the Ethgala Archaeological Site. Traveling 400 meters on the gravel road opposite to the board will bring you to a small tree patch in the middle of paddy fields where you will find remains of an ancient rampart and few stone pillars of a ancient building.

These ruins were  declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;

“Ancient construction covered by a stone rampart wall called “Ethgala” belonging to Parana Govipola village located at Pansalgoda Grama Niladari Division in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Lahugala in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º 86154′ N and longitude 081º 73591′ E).”

Another protected archaeological site called “Paranagovipola Ruins’ lies close the Ethgala and based on the gazette, it lies 120 meters in the paddy fields  on the opposite side of the road. The Paranagovipola ruins are described as  follows;

“Site of buildings with ancient stone pillars located in the area called “Parana Govipola” belonging to Parana Govipola village in Pansalgoda Grama Niladhari Division in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Lahugala in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º 86308′ N and longitude 081º 73647′ E).”
