The village of Wattamadu lies of South-West of the Sagama Reservoir in the interior accessible only by gravel roads which pass through the Sagama Reservoir bund and through vast paddy fields reaching the horizon. Ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery complex with dilapidated stupas, drip ledge caves and granite remains of ancient buildings in the area known as the Vattamadu has been discovered and designated as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;

“Building complex with ruins with places consists of ruined buildings, stupas and stone remains at the place called Wattamadu in the village Wattamadu situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 11C Sagama in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Thirukkovil in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 06′ 29” N and longitude 081º 45′ 45” E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get directions to this place from a party familiar  with the area before attempting to visit the place. It is unlikely that you will get any assistance from the villagers who are predominately non Buddhists.  Unfortunately some of the extreme elements are already gradually destroying such remote heritage sites in order to erase any signs Buddhist civilization in the area in the past.
