Serankada Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the hundreds of ancient temples of the ancient Digamadulla Kindom which flourished from time before Christ. As with many other ancient temples in the region, this temple too is attributed king Saddhatissa (137-119 BC), the brother of king Dutugemunu (161-131 BC). Before taking the reign from his brother, prince Saddhatissa was the regional ruler of Digamadulla kingdom.  Traveling 7.5 km from the Padiyathalawa town towards Mahaoya, will bring you the ancient Temple of Serankada right by the road.

The ruins of  this ancient viharaya has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“The two places with ruins of buildings and other archeological evidences at Ancient Temple premises, Serankada situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 137/A, Serankada in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Padiyathalawa in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º27´ 165´´ N and longitude 81º16´ 660´´ E).”
