Hingurana, which belongs to the Ampara district has been part of the ancient Digamdulla Kingdom which had flourished since the pre–Christian era.
A cave complex with carved-out drip ledges and ancient cave inscriptions in Keenawaththa village in the Damana area of Ampara district has been declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the location as follows ;
“Cave complex with drip ledges and inscriptions at the place called 35A land belonging to Grama 09 Keenawaththa village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. W/27/E, Keenawaththa in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Damana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º22´ 98.2´´ N and longitude 81º65´ 430´´ E).”
