A memorial for an Englishman called Henry John St. John in front of the Assistant Government Agents Bungalow at Hambantota has been declared as an archaeological monument. It was built around 1821 by the friends of the diseased. Henry John was born in 1798 as the third son to the parents of British general  Frederick St John (20 December 1765 — 19 November 1844)  and Arabella Craven. He had just arrived and had been appointed Assistant to the Collector on February 1, 1821. He died from a fever during a shooting excursion on 7th August 1821 aged 23.

The inscription on this monument reads as follows ;

In the memory of Henry John St. John Esquire,
late of His Majesty’s Civil Service in Ceylon,
third son of Lieutenant-General the Honourable
Frederick St. John, and nephew of Earl
Craven and Lord Viscount Bolingbroke and St. John,
who died at Paltoopani of a bilious fever
on the 7th August, 1821, aged twenty-three,
most deeply regretted by his numerous
friends and acquaintances.

In Coelo Quies.

A note on his death was published in the government gazette dated 14th August 1821:

“The many amiable traits in his character and disposition had already acquired him the goodwill and regard of all who knew him and the friendship and attachment of his more immediate intimates. He can be remembered by the former as the gentleman in every act of his short career among them, while his constant cheerfulness, great obligingness of disposition, and the Kberal character of his sentiments and conduct will long preserve in the recollection of the latter the loss they have sustained in his death.”
