Habarana Tampita Rajamaha Viharaya lies just off Habarana Junction towards Maradankadawala. This is a neatly maintained small temple with few buildings. The moonstones and broken stone pillars scattered around the temple reveal a hidden history of thousands of years of its existence.
One of the buildings of this temple is a small Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era conserved by the Department of Archaeology. A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Legend attributes this temple to king Vasabha (65-109 AD) of Anuradhapura kingdom.
According to folklore, it is said that the funeral of King Kashyapa was held at this temple after committing suicide with the defeat of his brother Mugalan in this area. It is also said that the ruins of the stupa at the top of the rock near the temple are in fact the tomb of Kashyapa although some historians believe that the lower stupa of Pidurangla is this tomb.
A small footpath from the temple leads to the Habarana Reservoir bund.
