The first thing which comes in to mind when you speak about Palwatta is the massive Sugar Plantation. However thousands of years ago this area was a thriving Buddhist community with temples dotting the landscape.
Sri Ovagiri Rajamaha Viharaya lies 3 kms from the Palwatta Junction towards Passara. The stupa of the temple has been rebuilt on the remains of the ancient stupa on a rocky plateau. Steps cut in the rock and granite steps at the top creates a path to the stupa.
The temple premises is scattered with granite artifacts of a temple which had existed a millennia ago. Broken pillars carved out of rock can be seen standing in several places, the only remains of ancient buildings. Various shaped and sized granite flower alters can be seen scattered around the temple.
