Chunnakam (ancient name: Hunugama) is a town in the Jaffna peninsula lying about 10 km off the Jaffna town on the Kankasanthure road. Chunnakam (Hunugama) is most known for the ancient Kadurugoda Viharaya of the Anuradhapura era.

Another item of interest at Chunnakam is the old market building built by the Dutch during its occupation of Sri Lanka between 1658 and 1796.

This building plays the same role today for which it was built over 200 years ago. Chunnakam market is a thriving marketplace serving the town from vegetables to clothes to mobile phones sold at the various shops set up in the area.

Unfortunately, new sheds have been set up to open room for new hawkers covering this magnificent building from all sides. Although declared as an archaeological monument, the central Dutch building is badly in need of maintenance if not conservation.
