A rocky area in the village of Darampanawa in Pottuvil, a rocky area has been identified with drip ledge caves, pre historic cave art, ruins of a stupa and other buildings. This area has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Darampanawa archaeological site with pre historic art, cave inscriptions and all the drip edged caves, ruins of buildings, hillock covering chaitya, ponds and other archaeological evidence in Darampanawa village situated at Grama Niladhari Division No. P 26 Hijranagar, in Divisional Secretary’s Division Pothuvil, in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º 56′ 10” N and longitude 081º 47′ 09” E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get more information and directions before attempting to visit the place. It is very unlikely that you would get any assistance in locating this site from the predominately non buddhist villagers who would prefer to see such sites disappear.
