Devon Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the country due clear view it provides from the popular Hatton Nuwara Eliya Road. At 97 meters, this is the 20th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Devon Falls got its name from Devon, who was a coffee planter and his estate.

The best view of this fall is from Dimbula where a special viewpoint is located with parking facilities. On the other side of the road is the famous Mlesna Tea Center where you can have a fresh cup of tea could be had. Almost Everybody who travels on this road to Nuwara Eliya is bound to at least break rest here before continuing the journey.

Unfortunately, This waterfall is one of the seven waterfalls which were affected by the Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project. These waterfalls are

  1. Devon Falls
  2. St Claire’s Falls
  3. Puna Oya Ella Falls – ( 70% reduction in the water flow)
  4. Ramboda Ella Falls – ( 50% reduction in the water flow)
  5. Dunsinane Falls ( Pandalu Oya Falls)
  6. St. Andrews Falls (50m) – expected to disappear altogether
  7. Hollywood Falls (25m) -?

Devon waterfall is one of the most affected waterfalls and the Government had to order relevant authorities that enough water be released so that St. Clair’s waterfall will maintain a continuous flow of 47,250 m3 (1,668,618 cu ft) of water for 10 hours and 30 minutes daily, between sunrise and sunset.

Travel Directions to Devon Falls

The waterfall lies on the main route to Nuwara Eliya from Colombo after passing Hatton. The best viewpoint of the waterfall is in front of the Mlesna Tea Centre. You can reach the top of the falls by turning left from Dimbula (just before the tea centre) and taking the Dimbula – Nawalapitiya Road (B117). You can see the top of the falls after travelling about 700 meters down this road.
