Gerandi Ella Falls (8m in height) flows into the Lokkgal Oya River and is surrounded by deciduous plants and tea estates. Due to its location, it is most impressive during September. Although this is marked as a 8 meter waterfall, this is much larger if you add all the 4-5 waterfalls dropping in steps. Situated on a large rocky slope, the waterfall provides a breathtaking view against the the surrounding greenery.

The waterfall can be seen at its best during the months of January to February. However the path is full of leaches during this period. Therefore safest period to visit is April to May where the ground is comparatively dry.

There are number of narrow and long waterfalls in Sri Lanka by the name of Garandi Ella which literally means Rat Snake Waterfall. The resemblance of these waterfalls to a slithering  rat snakes has given rise to many waterfalls being called by this name. The most popular and the well known is the Gerandi Ella ( aka Gerandigini Ella) in Tawalantanna area.

The Passara Gerandi Ella waterfall came to limelight in January 2022 when five members of the same family died of drawing at the foot of the waterfall. It took navy divers days to locate the bodies of the dead.

Situated in Gerandi Ella village (Passara Provincial Secretariat, Medawala GS), the fall is on the Passara – Madolsima road, 2km from the Medawelagama bus stop. It is possible to travel by either road or rail.

From Passara town take a Medawelagama bus for about 13 km, get off at Gardiella village and after traveling about 500m on the concrete road descend the stairs and cross the canal to a tea plantation on the left. At that point, a small waterfall cascades down a rocky outcrop. But to reach the beautiful Gerandi Ella waterfall you have to go along the the concrete canal which that carry water through the paddy fields and then you need follow the footpath in the jungle from the last house at the edge.
