Kandewela Ambalama is one of the many Ambalamas (wayside rests) in the Pahathahewaheta area. The Ambalama at Marassana lies away from the busy main roads in a picturesque farming area.

Four large pillars with carvings carry the main weight of the roof supported by 12 wooden pillars on the outer square. The inner pillars carry carved designs. All the pillars rest on wooden beams laid around the structure. The beams on the inner square are much larger and wide enough to be used as a bench to sit or sleep.

As in most wooden Ambalama buildings of this era, the beams which hold the tiles are connected without any wooden or iron nails. These beams are held together at the top by their own opposing force in the centre which is called “Kanimadala”.

The ambalama had been in an extremely dilapidated state until 2005 when it had been restored. decayed wood had been replaced and the roof rebuilt and tiled with clay barrel-type tiles (Sinhala Ulu).

To reach the Ambalama, travel to Appallagoda from Kandy and take Kandewela Road. Travel approximately 1.5 km on this road until you come across the ancient Kandewela Temple near the Kandewela school. Take the gravel road to the left from the small boutique in front of the temple which will take you to the paddy fields. The ambalama can be reached by walking approx 500 meters along this path.
