Niyuguna Rajamaha Viharaya lies about 600 meters off the Siyamblanduwa – Damana – Ampara Road about 3 km passing Damana junction towards Ampara. A typical archaeology board directs you to the turn-off to a recently concreted road.
The ruins of this temple was declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the location as follows;
“Hillock of Dagoba, rock inscription, ruins of buildings, plight of steps and places with evidences of Pre-historic era in the premises of Niuguna Rajamaha Vihara belonging to Niuguna village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 5-2-34-0501, Irakkamam 05 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Eragama (Irakkamam) in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
In addition, a drip ledge cave on a rock west of the temple has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;
“Drip ledged cave located at the west of the Niyuguna Rajamaha Vihara belonging to Niyuguna village situated at No. 5-2-34-0501 Irakkamam Grama Niladhari Division in Eragama (Irakkamam) Divisional Secretary’s Division in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 7º 13′ 43”N and longitude 081º 42′ 00” E).”
