Parape Sri Vishuddarama Purana Tampita Viharaya

Sri Vishuddarama Purana Viharaya is an ancient temple deveopped during the period of Kandyan kingdom lying in the village of Parape in Rambukkana. The Tampita Viharaya of this temple is fairly well maintained and is built on 7 feet high granite pillars.

A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. 7 feet high pillars in this tampita viharaya is an exception. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The image house on the structure is surrounded by a circumambulating path. A wooden balustrade surrounds the circumambulating path. There are two statues of guardian deities at the entrance to the image house. Both the inner and outer walls of the image house are covered with murals. Fortunately, these murals still maintain the original painting. The main seated Buddha statue in the image house is flanked by 2 seated Buddha statues. The aura around the main seated image house is of high calibre. Two smaller statues of deities can be found beside the standing Buddha statues. Unfortunately, the historical value of the statues and paintings has been somewhat lost due to recent repainting on the originals.
