Pitawala Pathana Ella Fall No 1
Pitawala Pathana Ella Fall No 1 – by Dr Ashan Geeganage
Height :75
District :Matale

The Knuckles mountain range, called so because it resembles the knuckles of a clenched fist, consists of 35 peaks which rise above 900m, perhaps the highest aggregation of such peaks in a single mountain range. However, the Knuckles landscape is not restricted to the mountains alone.

Approach it from its end in the Matale district along the Rattota-Illukkumbura Road and you will come to Pitawala Patana, a large and splendid grassland. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is a rare type of grassland that evolved in response to a particular ecological condition and can be found nowhere else in the country. It consists of 10ha in area. A semi evergreen forest on somewhat deeper soil surrounds the grassland.

There are two significant waterfalls in this area formed by Pathana Dola. Due to the remoteness of these waterfalls, there are rarely visited thus carries no special names.

Pitawala Pathana Ella 1 lies deep inside the jungle. This is approximately 75 meters in height. To reach the waterfall, you need to hike passing the abandoned village of Pathana Gama where only 2 houses exists now. This village has has been established by the Redbana Company in the 1960-70 as a settlement village for the growing cardamom in the area. Subsequently this project was abandoned leaving the villagers without any work. Most of them have now moved out other than two who still lives there to tell the story. Please see here  for more details and and the travel guide to these waterfalls

Pitawala Patana Ella 2 lies about 150 meters below the the fall number 1 on Pathana Dola  and falls in a cascades over protruding rocks creating a wider waterfall  and giving it a misty outlook.

These waterfalls are not listed in the database of Lanka Council of Waterfalls (LCWF)
