The area of Thonikal Kandam lies West of the Sagama Reservoir on the Akkaraipattu – Sangaman road. Ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery complex with dilapidated stupas, drip ledge caves, inscriptions and granite remains of ancient buildings in this area have been discovered and designated as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and described the location as follows;
“Buddhist Monastery complex with hillock covering of stupa, drip ledged caves, rock inscriptions and ruins of buildings at Thonikal Kandam belonging to village Thonikal Kandam situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 11C, Sagama in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Thirukkovil in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º07’49” N and longitude 081º46’33” E).”
GPS location is marked based on the above description. However, it is recommended to get directions to this place from a party familiar with the area before attempting to visit the place. It is unlikely that you will get any assistance from the villagers who are predominately non-Buddhists. Unfortunately, some of the extreme elements are already gradually destroying such remote heritage sites in order to erase any signs of Buddhist civilization in the area in the past.
