Uduwawala is small town between Katuagastota and Medawala in the Kandy Distinct. A small ancient Ambalama (wayside rest) lies on the Uduwawala Junction on the Katuagastota – Medawala road partly functioning as a Bus Stop.
The Uduwawala Ambalama is a square brick and mortar structure. The roof is built on seven brick pillars and and 2 wooden pillars which also serve as the door frame. The brick pillars are cylindrical tapering at the top. The roof is designed in a hip roof style, a popular ambalama style during the Kandyan Era and is tiled with semi-cylindrical clay tiles (Sinhala ulu).
However, some of these features have been changed during the restoration process. The two wooden pillars have been taken off and the shape of the pillars has been changed and the original tapering shape is not seen today.
The seating arrangement of the Ambalama is typical of the class-based Kandyan Society. The benches are designed at different heights to accommodate different classes of people to sit together.
This ambalama was declared as a protected archaeological monument in 2009.

Travel Directions to Uduwawala Ambalama
Kandy can be reached from Colombo on the old Colombo – Kandy road (option 1) which is scenic but heavy in traffic, especially on Fridays and Sundays. However, the new Central Expressway (option 2) has opened up a new route which is longer but less cumbersome.
