Viharegama Maliyadeva Rajamaha Viharaya lies about 16 kilometers away from the Dambadeniya. It is said that the Maliyadeva Thero who is considered the last Arhaths of Sri Lanka had been cremated at Viharegama and a stupa had been built at Viharegama depositing the ashes.
During ancient times (13th century) when Dambadeniya was the capital Dambadeniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Wattarama Rajamaha Viharaya and Viharegama Rajamaha Viharaya where the Maliyadeva Thero had spent most of the time had been popular pilgrimages.
The cave complex and the ancient Sangaramaya building at the temple has been declared as a protected archaeology monument by the department of archaeology. The temple lies about 4.5 kms from Narammala. Take the Polgahayaya from Narammala town and travel 4 km to reach this temple.
