The hillock at Weeranthalawa consists of ancient Buddhist ruins including a stupa and granite pillars in the Tempitiya area in Mahaoya. The ruins surrounding this hillock were declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government in the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Site of ruins with the hillock of Chaitya, and stone pillars at the place of (Latitude 07º 56′ 818” N and longitude 081º 34′ 416” E) in the Weeranathalawa village situated in Grama Niladhari Division Unuwathura Bubula in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Mahaoya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
