Sirimalwatta is a small town about 6 km away from Kandy, on the route to the popular Degaldoruwa Rajamaha Viharaya. The Sirimalwatta Ambalama lies at the junction where the road to the Sirimalwatta Rajamaha Viharaya falls on the road to Degaldoruwa Temple.
A 1995 article describes this ambalama as being built on a rough stone base though now the floor is made of cement.
The pillars are made of brick and mortar and have a double grid at two levels separated by a distance of about four and a half feet. Four ends and twelve pillars rise from the inner and outer grids respectively. This double grid obviously allowed more sitting accommodation in the building.
To reach this ambalama, take the Lewalla road from Kandy and passing Gangaramaya Rajamaha Viharaya and continue to the Sirimalwatta road from Lewella. The ambalama lies 850 meters down this road.

Travel Directions to Yakgahapitiya Sirimalwatta Ambalama
Kandy can be reached from Colombo on the old Colombo – Kandy road (option 1) which is scenic but heavy in traffic, especially on Fridays and Sundays. However, the new Central Expressway (option 2) has opened up a new route which is longer but less cumbersome.
