Udawela Rajamaha Viharaya is another ancient but forgotten temple probably belonging to the Ruhunu Kingdom. The temple lies off the Ella – Wellawaya road lost to the outside world.
Ruins of ancient buildings and Buddhist monuments lie scattered around the temple. An ancient bodhi tree lies next to an ancient stupa resembling a mound of bricks. A pinnacle (koth kerella) and a ‘Chatra Gala’ carved out of granite lie neglected on the ground.
On another side lies a group of granite pillars which had held a building still stands after thousands of years of neglect.
This temple can be reached by taking the right-hand turn (towards Mallaththawa school) after travelling 3.7 km from Wellawaya. The temple lies just after the bridge across Kirindi Oya.
