As you travel passing Nonagama Junction in Ambalantota, just before the bridge over the Walawe River, you will find the Girihandu Rajamaha Viharaya of Ambalantota. The temple is believed to have been built by King Devanapiyatissa in the 2nd century BC.

Due to its current name, some believe that the hair relics of Buddha brought by the Thapassu Balluka merchants were enshrined in this temple. But it has now been accepted that the hair relics are enshrined at the Girihandu Seya at Thiriyaya in Trincomalee.

A ruined statue of Avalokiteshvara Buddha belonging to the 7th Century BC has been discovered among the ruins. Further, ruins of a Viharaya, Damma Hall and abode of monks can be seen at this sacred place.
