As you travel on the Ampara road from Moaragala through Siyambalanduwa just before Govinda Hela Rocks (Westminister Abbey) there is a road to the left which goes around the Kandakebellegoda hill. There are two ancient temples on this road. The first one you will find is the Sandakebella Aranya Senasanaya, a functioning hermitage of meditating Buddhist monks. Passing it and travelling towards Ruppebedda, you would find the Kandanketiya Ancient Temple lying at the bottom of Kandakebellegoda Hill.
The ancient stupa of this temple has been completely destroyed and a new one built. Bricks of the ancient stupa can be seen scattered around the new stupa. Other than these few rock pillars can be also seen in the temple. Other than this, this temple has been mostly modernized.
Kandanketiya temple once had an ancient pagoda which few ruins of it still can be seen around the newly built one. Also, there are a few pillars in the temple premises.
