The Temple where the Teledrama SIDU was shot

Kabella Lena Purana Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient cave temple in the Kurunegala District in the Maeliya area. As with most ancient cave temples which date back to the Anuradhapura era, this has been renovated during the Kanyan Era and now shows archaeological and artistic characteristics of the Kandian Era.

A fairly large stupa of this temple has been restored by the Department of Archeology. This temple came to the limelight with the popular teledrama “Sidu” where the temple was used at the site where the small Samanera “Soratha” resided.

Travelling 12.5 km from Kurunegala towards Galewela and 7.2 km past the Badagamuwa Conservation Forest, you will reach Ibbagamuwa Junction. From here take the left side road towards Kumbukwewa. Travel 24 km on this road passing Kumbukwewa and Maeliya to reach a small lane to the right near a small tea shop. At the top of the road, you will see a signboard which states “Sri Sumagala Mulika Pirivena, Kabella Lena Purana Rajamaha Viharaya, Degama, Maeliya”. The temple lies about 500 meters on this road.
