The Prehistoric Burial Site of Dewalapola in Minuwangoda was discovered in 2016 on the premises of Dewalapola Ananda Maha Vidyalaya. Two clay burial canoes have been discovered on the access path to the school. The excavation took place based on a belief among the locals regarding an ancient burial ground at the school.

Multiple funerary urns had been located on the canoes.  These remains are believed to be 3000 years old according to Senior Lecturer Mangala Katugampola from the Department of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya who led the excavation.

Some of the urns have been made by hand some by a potter’s wheel. This indicates that pottery was an industry practised even as far back as the 14th century BCE.
