Located at the foot of the Samanalathanna mountain range, ruins of ancient buildings, ponds and a stupa at the Samanalathanna Forest Hermitage in Dehiaththakandiya is believed to belong to the Polonnaruwa era (11th – 13th centuries).  The ruins are scattered in an area of about 25 acres and the ancient drip ledge caves on this site today serve as residence and meditation “kuti” for the bikkus of the hermitage. The ruins of the Samanalathanna Hermitage were declared a protected archaeological monument by the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“232. Samanalathanna mountain range with drip-ledged cave complex, hillock of Chaitya, Chronicles, ponds and place containing ruins of buildings at the foot of the mountains range at the place of (Latitude 07º 40′ 36” N and longitude 081º 4′ 49.5” E) near the premises of Samanalathanna vihara in Samanalathanna village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 142/N, Kadirapura in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Dehiaththakandiya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.

234. Rock inscription, a hillock of Dagoba and the site containing ruins of buildings at the place of (Latitude 07º 40′ 36” N and longitude 081º 4′ 49.5” E) in Samanalathanna village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 142/N, Kadirapura in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Dehiaththakandiya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
