Yalpotha Reservoir is an ancient tank lying east of the popular Lahugala Magul Maha Viharaya in Lahugala. This reservoir lies on the right to the road leading to Pottuvil just 600 meters pass the turn off to the Magul Maha Viharaya.
The ancient sluice and the breakwater (rala panawa) of this tank lies on the opposite side to the main road and these were declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;
“Ancient sluice and break water of Yalpotha tank located at Bogahalanda village in Pansalgoda Grama Niladhari Division in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Lahugala in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º86940′ N and longitude 081º 74312′ E).”
