Eragama (Irakkamam in Tamil) is a town in the Ampara District with over 90% of the population being Muslims. A rock plain with an ancient inscription, ruins of an ancient stupa and other evidence of an ancient temple complex in the village of Sapanagar in Eragama has been declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;
“Rock plain with rock inscription, place containing ruins of Dagoba and Kethukawata at 8th Mile Post (latitude 07º 12′ 49” N and longitude 081º 44′ 32” E) belonging to, Sapanagar village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 5-2-34-015 Irakkamam 02 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Eragama (Irakkamam), in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
GPS location is marked based on the above description. However, it is recommended to get more information and directions before attempting to visit the place. It is very unlikely that you would get any assistance in locating this site from the predominately non-Buddhist villagers who would rather prefer to see such sites disappear.
