Two locations at Thiruwaliwarpuram have been discovered consisting of archaeological evidence of the Buddhist civilization of the ancient Digamadulla kingdom. The first site lies in close to the Walatha Wewa right bank canal which flows across the paddy fields in the Thiruwaliwarpuram area. The ruins consist of granite pillars, stone tablets, inscriptions and other artefacts.

The second site lies en route to the first site close to the main Ampara – Samanthure road. This is a rock plain with more archaeological evidence. These two site were declared as protected archaeological sites by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the locations as follows ;

“Settlement with stone pillars, stone tablets, inscriptions, ancient pottery pieces, remains of scattered tile and bricks belonging to Thiruwaliwarpuram Village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 89, Thiruwaliwarpuram Malwaththa 01 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Sammanturei in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º32´ 81.9´´N and longitude 081º74´ 98.2´´ E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However, it is recommended to get more information and directions before attempting to visit the place. It is very unlikely that you would get any assistance in locating this site from the predominately non-Buddhist villagers who would rather prefer to see such sites disappear.
