Kohombana village lies in the Gonagolla area Ampara District. The above picture shows the sad state of these archaeological ruins at Gonagolla village. The ancient ruins lies on a private paddy field and only a approx 4×4 meter area has been reserved for the few ruins of a ancient building marked by 4 Archaeology Dept. concrete stumps.
As you can see, the few pieces of rock pillars of the ancient building has been piled together at the center and even the small area demarcated by the archaeology department has been ploughed to plant paddy. Any significance of this site and been now reduced to pile of rubble.
This site has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014 and is described in the gazette as follows ;
“Site with ruins of buildings in Kohombana village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. W/102/01, Walagampura in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Uhana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º23´ 18´´ N and longitude 081º37´ 02´´ E).”
