Kinkini Raja Maha Viharaya is situated near the Wellawaya Tissamaharama A2 road at the 312 km post in the Andawelayaya Garama Niladari Division of the Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat area of the Moneragala District in the Uva Province near Kirindi Oya.

The temple lying 6.5  kilometers from Wellawaya and 28 km from Thanamalwila. The temple looks modern from the road, but behind these new buildings lie the ruins of the ancient temple which is believed to go back to the king Walagamba (89-77 BC).  The relics at this premises include an ancient building with stone columns, a stupa mound, balustrade, un carved moonstone and several clay pipes could be identified in the premises.

To reach the ruined area, you need to take a small foot path towards the forested area behind the temple.  A Buddha statue on a small structure lies in front of the overgrown ancient stupa now resembling a mound of earth. Granite pillars, some complete and some broken stand up at various places displaying locations of buildings of the ancient viharaya.
