The conserved stupa at the top of the rock in Murukkuwatawana Gallen Rajamaha Viharaya

Murukkuwatawana is a remote village lying on the Tabbowa – Miyellawa road surrounded by jungle from all four sides. The ancient temple complex at Murukkuwatawana lies at the center of a large rocky outcrop adjoining the village.

This area lies just 50 km off Anuradhapura and contains a large number of ruins of temple complexes covered by the jungle. Vilandagoda Aranya which is believed to be the hiding place of Saliya – Asokamala also lies in this vicinity. Most these temple complexes belongs to Anuradhapura period.

The Murukkuwatawana Gallen Rajamaha Viharaya is a mixture of modern buildings with in a temple complex built millennia ago. An ancient stupa has been conserved at the highest point of the rock. Many caves with drip ledges scatters the rocky outcrop. Granite artifacts of the ancient temple can be seen scattered all over the land of the temple. Among the ruins, a new large seated Buddha statue was ceremoniously opened to the public in 2012.
