If you take the lesser travelled route to Jaffna through Pooneryn, There are several places which you could visit on the Sand Bar below the Jaffna Peninsula. This land mass is about 22 kilometres long. The road is not tared. The whole land mass is a sandy beach stretching to the horizon only disturbed by a remote house, church or an army checkpoint.
Ruins of old Shiva kovil can be found 12 km along the sandy road along this road. As you travel along this road passing the sand dunes, you will come across the Manniththalai Jetty.
A hundred meters past this jetty you will see ruins of this Kovil behind a church on the land side. Remains of this kovil is now being protected by a building covering this structure.
Remains of this kovil was declared as a protected archaeological monument on 12 June 2015.
