Nagolla Raja Maha Viharaya is thought to be built by King Vatta Gamini Abaya aka King Walagamba between 103 BC – 89 BC, during his hiding from South Indian invaders.

The temple can be reached from the Alauwa Bus Route from Kurunegala. After traveling about 2 1/2 km on this road, you will come to the Dharmapala Mawatha. Take the right-by lane in the Dharmapala Mawatha and travel about 1 1/2 km to reach the temple
