Angammedilla National Park is a lesser-known and relatively rarely visited national park located in Polonnaruwa. Originally designated as a forest reserve within the Minneriya–Giritale Sanctuary on 12 February 1988, it was later elevated to national park status on 6 June 2006. This designation was primarily intended to protect the catchment area of Parakrama Samudraya, also known as the “Sea of Parākramabāhu.”
Geography and Climate
The Amban Ganga River, which originates from Sudu Kanda, forms the southern boundary of the park. A mountain range extends across the park from Giritale to Minneriya, creating varied terrain.
During periods of drought, the park becomes extremely dry, while in the rainy season, the mountainous regions receive significantly higher rainfall than the surrounding plains. Due to this combination of wet and dry climatic conditions, the vegetation within the park is a mixture of both wet zone and dry zone plant species.
Hydrology and Historical Features
The park office is located at the point where the Amban Ganga diverts water into Parakrama Samudraya through the 8-kilometer (approximately 5 miles) long Angammedilla Canal. At this location, Angammedilla National Park connects to Wasgamuwa National Park via a narrow corridor, allowing wildlife to move freely between the two regions.
One of the most historically significant features within the park is the Raja Bamma, an ancient weir built across the Amban Ganga by King Parākramabāhu (1153–1186 CE) more than 900 years ago.
Visitor Access and Regulations
Until recently, it was possible to drive up to the ancient weir and even camp by the river. However, such access is no longer permitted, and visitors must now obtain tickets to enter the park. Fortunately, the ticket office is located at the beginning of the Angammedilla Canal.
Access Route
To reach the ticketing office from Polonnaruwa, visitors should travel along the Parakrama Samudraya bund road to its far end. From there, the journey continues along the Angammedilla Canal for approximately 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) to reach the park entrance.
