Dunsinane Falls, also known as Pundalu Oya Ella, is an impressive 100-meter-high waterfall located near the town of Pundalu Oya. It descends in a dramatic series of cascades before joining the Pundalu Oya river, which then flows into the Kotmale River and eventually into the Kotmale Reservoir. This waterfall is known by several names, including Dunsinan-Sheen Falls, Dansinanshin Falls, and Pundalu Oya Ella.
The waterfall is uniquely situated between two tea estates—Dunsinane Estate on one side and Sheen Estate on the other—hence the name Dunsinane Falls, combining both estate names.
The waterfall is divided into two distinct segments by a road bridge. The upper segment drops around 30 meters over a wide rock ledge, creating a curtain-like flow of water that is clearly visible from the bridge. However, the second segment, which plunges another 70 meters, is hidden below the bridge and not easily accessible. Reaching the base of the waterfall is difficult due to the steep terrain, and access is further restricted because the river area below the falls has been declared a high-security zone under the Upper Kotmale Project.
