Thottama is a remote village far away from any major road network in the Damana Divisional Secretariat.  The ancient temple of Thottama Kukuluwa Rajamaha Viharaya lies on the edges of the scenic Ambalamoya Reservoir.  A gravel road from Damana-Pannalgama passing the Ambalamoya Reservoir Bund, will take you to this temple premises.

The ancient stupa and other archaeological remains of the Thottama Kukuluwa Rajamaha Viharaya was  declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Archaeological evidences including ancient chaithya, ruins of buildings with stone pillars, and ponds at the premises of Kukuluwa Raja Maha Viahraya belonging to Mahanagapura-Ihalagam village situated at Grama Niladhari Division Thottama W/25 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Damana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 13884′ N and longitude 081º 70325′ E)”
