Ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery have been discovered on the rock plains on the eastern edge of the Wembadikulama Forest Reservation. These ruins have been designated as a protected archaeological site since 2014.

Kotigala Rock plains lies along the Sammanthurai – Deeghavapi Road in the middle of a paddy field. A drip ledge cave with inscriptions on this rock has been designated as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;

“Kotigala rock plain where the drip ledged cave with Brahmi inscriptions is situated in the place called Kotigala belonging to Pennanweli village in No. SP 84C-005-07 Irakkamam Grama Niladhari Division in Eragama (Irakkamam) Divisional Secretary’s Division in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 7º 16′ 46” N and longitude 081º 45′ 30” E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However, it is recommended to get directions to this place from a party familiar with the area before attempting to visit the place. It is unlikely that you will get any assistance from the villagers who are predominately non-Buddhists.  Unfortunately, some of the extreme elements are already gradually destroying such remote heritage sites to erase any signs of Buddhist civilization in the area in the past.
