Hali Ella Atampitiya Fort at Kotugodella lies on a hill close to Atampitiya town and is believed to be a Portuguese fort. Atampitiya has been one of the places Sinhalese fought the invading Portuguese forces and even today there is a place called Parangi Ella where it is said that all the dead Portuguese were thrown in.
The Etampitiya Kotugodella Fort can be accessed through the concrete road lying next to the Etampitiya Government Hospital. From there you need to take the gravel road towards the top of the hill. The total distance to the fort from the main road is approx. 750m.
Today only the foundation of the fort can be seen. This fort was declared a protected archaeological site in 2002.
