Akkarepattuwa Isankernychmai Archaeological Site – අක්කරේපත්තුව ඉසන්කර්නිච්මයි පුරාවිද්‍යා භූමිය

These are two rock plains lying close by to each other in middle of a paddy field in the Isankernychmai (Issankernychemai) village in Akkarapattuwa (Akkaraipattu) Divisional Secretary’s Division. The first rock plain consist of ruins of an ancient stupa and ruins of buildings.

The second rock plain lying 300 meters away again on the same paddy field consists of chisel holes and pieces of ancient bricks and pottery scattered round rhe plain.

These two rock plains have been declared as a protected archaeological sites by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the locations as follows;

“Rock plane with hillock of ancient Chaithya, places of the ruins of buildings and where ancient tiles, bricks etc are scattered, in the middle of paddy field belonging to Isanganichmai village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. AP/20A/3, Isanganichmai in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Akkarapaththu in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º13´ 06´´ N and longitude 81º47´46´´ E).”

“Rock plane, where chisel holings and pieces of ancient bricks and pottery and other archeological evidences are scattered, in the middle of paddy field of Isanganichmai village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. AP/20A/3, Isanganichmai in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Akkarapaththu in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 071º258´´ N and longitude 81º47´ 55´´ E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get more information and directions before attempting to visit the place. It is very unlikely that you would get any assistance in locating this site from the predominately non buddhist villagers who would rather prefer to see such sites disappear.
