Kandekumbura Ambalama is a small brick and mortar wayside rest lying 9 kms from Katugastota on the Katugastota – Kurunegala road. Ambalama is a way side rest built during the times of kings at various strategic places on popular routes for the weary traveler to rest or sleep the night.
This ambalama is built on a approx. 10 feet x 10 feet foundation with a small porch at the entrance.
According to Rohitha Dasanayake of Peradeniya University, this ambalama has been built on 1st March 1938 by a person called Galpatigedhara Kiripuncha. Even though this structure lies just beside a main road, its roof and the structure is crumbling and weeds cover the surrounding area. Unfortunately this this ambalama is not old enough to be classified as an archaeological monument and thus no attention has been given to restore it by the government.
To reach this ambalama from Peradeniya, travel to Aladeniya through Halloluwa and travel towards Galagedara for a total distance of 12 km to reach this structure hidden between tall grass on the side of the road.
