Monarakanda Oya Ella waterfall is one of the waterfalls described by Eberhard Kautzsch in his 1983 “A guide to waterfalls of Sri Lanka” which is considered the first book dedicated to waterfalls of Sri Lanka. Dr Kautzsch has spelled this waterfall as ‘Monerakanda Oya Fall’.

He goes on to say

“The Monerakanda Oya rushes north of the Maussakele tea estate on the southern slope of Devathagala (1805m NN). Above the Maussakele estate bungalow are the falls which is best seen when there is enough water in the steam.

Drive from Koslanda westward to Nahaketiya (2km) where a narrow road with many bends through tea plantations takes one up the hill to the Maussakele estate. This road is only motorable by jeep (6km) There is a beautiful view of the hills of the coastal plains and the Thotalugala Factory in the west and even far as the Horton Plains if the air is clear.

During the dry climate the narrow road from Nahaketiya to Maussakele is motarable by Jeep up to Dambethenna (9km). The fine landscape is inviting for a walk (2 h) in the early morning”

Other than this description of the waterfall no other information exists other than a photo from LCWF which is supposedly this waterfall.

The marker shown below is only an approximate location of this waterfall based on the location of the Maussakele estate bungalow which lies 6 km off the Nahaketiya turn-off.
