Pothana Rajamaha Viharaya at Sigiriya is an ancient cave temple rarely visited by pilgrims lies west to the Rock Fortress of Sigiriya.
The temple lies on a rocky outcrop and 10 caves have been recorded in this rock cluster. The temple is built around 2 large caves on this rock. The largest cave is 12m long and 7.3 meters high. The smallest is just 4.3 meters long and 4 meters high.
The main cave at Pothana has been subject to excavations by the PGIAR in 1991 and over 40,000 animal bone fragments and stone tools had been discovered. These have been dated to Mesolithic period about 6000 BP.
